5 Principles for Working With AI Agents

After six months of daily collaboration, here is what actually works.

1. Give Clear Direction, Not Wishes

This is the big one. When something goes wrong, it's on me. Not the AI.

I've made all of these. Save yourself the trouble.

Mistake #1: Treating AI Like a Search Engine

Google gives you answers. AI agents give you possibilities. If you're asking "what is X" you're underutilizing the tool.

Better questions: "Analyze X from three perspectives," "Compare X and Y with specific criteria," "Draft X in my voice based on these examples."

Mistake #2: Failing to Provide Context

AI agents work better when they understand the bigger picture. Who is the audience? What's the goal? What constraints matter? The more context you give them, the better. You can't expect your agent to guess what you want it to do.

I used to just dump the task. Now I give context first: "We're writing for technical founders who are skeptical of AI hype. The tone should be contrarian and honest. Include a real failure."

Mistake #3: Accepting First Drafts
